Body, structure and general items
A thorough check of the overall condition of the vehicle. It must be free from excessive corrosion and damage in specific areas.
Fuel system
The fuel system will be inspected for leaks and to ensure that the fuel filler cap is fixed securely.
Exhaust Emissions
Must be within the advised legal limit and will be inspected according to the age of the vehicle. The exhaust system will be checked for excessive black or blue smoke emitted.
Exhaust system
An inspection of the exhaust will be carried out to make sure it is secure and that it does not show signs of leaks and is not too noisy.
Seats and seat belts
Seats will be checked and must be securely fixed. Seat belts will be checked for type, security and condition.
Lights
A comprehensive check of all the lights, to include: vehicles front lights, rear lights and brake lights. Fog lights, indicators and the registration plate lights will also be inspected and the test will also look at the warning light for the main beam and the aim of the headlamp.
Doors
All doors must open and close correctly and should latch securely when closed. Front doors must be able to open from the inside and outside the vehicle and rear doors from the outside.
Horn
The horn must be present and functioning effectively.
Registration plates
A check of the registration plates for condition, security, legibility and characters being correctly formed and spaced.
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
A VIN plate must be legibly displayed on the vehicle.
Speedometer
We will check that there is no damage and is sufficiently illuminated.
Electrics
All wiring must be secure and not damaged.
Battery
The battery must not show any leakages and must be fixed securely.
Steering and suspension
Steering and suspension must be of a satisfactory condition and operation. These will be tested and inspected for wear or damage.
Brakes
We will carry out an inspection of the overall condition of the brakes; to include performance and operation checks as well as the condition of the brakes.
Tyres and wheels
Tyre conditions, along with size, tread depth, security, and type.
Mirrors
Mirrors will be checked for condition and security, making sure they give adequate views to the rear and side.
Wipers
Wipers and washers must operate effectively.
Windscreen
This will be checked for any chips or cracks making sure that there is a clear view of the road ahead.
After completion of the MOT test you will be issued with a VT20 certificate if the vehicle has passed or a VT30 certificate if the vehicle has failed. This will list the items that are causing your MOT failure.
If your vehicle does fail its MOT test, then all issues will need to be rectified. Please check with us, as you may be eligible for a free retest once it is back up and running to the required standard.
